Some connections standards (like VITA46, VPX) have different numbers of pins on a backplane connector than on the plug-in module connector. The achieved connections even differ depending on the position of a wafer in the connector for differential wafers.
To overcome these issues BoardTrace is equipped with Adapters. An adapter is a kind of simple netlist which is used as an intermediate between the backplane and plug-in connectors. It allows you to re-define how connector pins connect between boards. A used adapter is named an Adaption.
Below is an example of the effect of the adapter use.
The left image uses a normal connection in which all pins are just connected to there opposite site.
The plug-in connector pins E1, E2 and E3 don't exist on the backplane connector.
The right image shows an VPX: Power adapter beeing used.
You can see for example that the backplane pins C3, D3, F3, G3, H3 ad I3 belong to the group Vss3 and connect to Plug-in module pins C3, E3, F3, G3.
The signals on plug-in module pins C8 and B8 are incorrectly connected.
All adaptions for a single VPX Plug-in module to a backplane (either 3U or 6U high) can be quickly defined using the ‘Add OpenVPX adaptions’ dialog.
Standard VPX adapters are:
Custom adapters can be added using configuration files.
